Connecticut seniors struggling with dental care costs receive help
Updated: 12/12/2008 12:00:51 PM
Connecticut seniors struggling with dental care costs receive helpAfter they retire and lose access to dental insurance from their employer, some senior citizens may be more reluctant to visit a dentist.

However, dental professionals of all types say that this is a mistake. In fact, according to the American Dental Association, proper dental care at this age is the best way to protect against gum disease and tooth loss.

At the University of Bridgeport in Connecticut, dental hygiene students are working hard to make sure that a lack of dental insurance or financial problems do not interfere with seniors' opportunities to access dental care.

They operate a dental hygiene clinic that provides a less costly option for teeth cleanings, dental checkups and other services. As part of the program, students also make stops at nursing homes around the area.

Marcia Lorentzen, director of clinical affairs at the clinic, told the news provider that students are always under the supervision of faculty members.

"Nothing is done without there being agreement with faculty that this needs to be done," she said.

Seniors and other individuals who are looking to save money on dental care may want to look into discount dental plans, which provide savings of 10 to 60 percent on most dental procedures.
