Many U.S. families struggling to afford dental care

Nearly one in four children in America has not had any dental care in the past year, according to new data.

The cost of dental care and dental insurance are a challenge to many families, with rural Hispanic and African American children most significantly affected, a University of South Carolina study found.

Nearly 32 percent of rural Hispanic children had not visited a dentist in over a year, while 26 percent of rural African American children and 22 percent of white children faced the same situation.

Additionally, Hispanic children in both urban and rural areas were found to be the least likely group to have dental insurance.

"Dental care has been designated as the most prevalent unmet health need in U.S. children and this report underscores that the problem is particularly acute among rural children," commented lead author Dr. Amy Brock Martin.

She urged policymakers concerned with dental health, dental care and dental insurance issues to use the study's findings to inform their decisions.
