Study: Fluoridated water boosts seniors' dental health

Study: Fluoridated water boosts seniors' dental healthOlder adults get the most dental health benefit from fluoridated water, a study has found.

Research reported in the Fall 2007 Journal of Public Health Dentistry and carried out by the Indiana School of Dentistry showed that older people benefit from having fluoride in tap water even more than children do.

A team led by Dr Gerardo Maupome studied the relationship between access to fluoridated public water and the number of dental fillings and associated costs required by children, adults and older people.

While it has long been known that fluoride helps prevent tooth decay and protect dental health, the study discovered that it has the greatest effect on those in the upper age group.

"Many older adults, who are often retired, don't have dental insurance and so prevention of decay is very important," Maupome commented.

Meanwhile, a separate study from the Victorian Government Department of Human Services in Melbourne found that fluoridation of water helps to protect teeth in people of all ages.

Children aged six living in the fluoridated areas of Victoria have 45 per cent less tooth decay than those in non-fluoridated areas.
