Good choices on Halloween promote dental health Parents who are concerned about their children's dental health might be wise to do a bit of research before setting rules on Halloween candy consumption, it has been suggested.

Orthodontist Robert Pickron advised families to assess their options before they buy sweets for the late-October event.

"By following guidance on dental hygiene and avoiding certain foods, you can enjoy treats and keep your kids on track toward a healthy, beautiful smile," he said.

For example, he pointed out that children who consume a healthy dinner before they head out for trick-or-treating are less likely to overindulge on candy later.

Sugar-free candy can still taste sweet and provide less of a threat to dental health, while supposedly healthy snacks such as dried fruit contain decay-causing acids, Pickron advised.

He also warned against allowing kids with braces from eating sticky candies such as caramels, licorice, toffee or bubble gum.

Earlier this month, the American Association of Orthodontists cautioned that even some savory snacks such as pretzels and popcorn can be risky for those who wear braces.
