Patients welcome dental care with a nature soundtrack

Some people who suffer from anxiety before visiting the dentist would do anything to avoid hearing the whir of the dental drill.

A new tool called b-Calm may allow these people to relax and enjoy their dental care experience. This handheld audio sedation advice covers up the sound of the drill and substitutes a more pleasing soundtrack including waves and nature sounds, the Cedar Falls Courier reports.

Dr Ken Budke, inventor of the device, told the publication that he hopes it will encourage people to make more regular visits to the dentist.

"If people are afraid to go to the dentist, they end up ignoring preventive care and wind up coming in on an emergency basis, which is more costly," he explained.

Budke said that unlike music, the sounds generated by b-Calm allow patients to relax their brains and stop thinking.

The invention has even been tested in environments outside the dentist's office, such as in maternity wards and educational settings.

According to the American Dental Association, visualizing yourself in a relaxing setting - such as lying on a beach - can help calm anxiety during a trip to the dentist.
