(ARA) - You need more protein in your diet. You get it from your mother's side of the family. If you wear baseball caps a lot, your hair falls out. If you're a guy dealing with hair loss, you've probably heard all these myths and more.
And of course, the biggest myth of all - there's nothing you can do about your hair loss.
The truth is there are many reasons why a man might lose his hair and some of them can be pretty complex. The majority of what we call "male pattern baldness," however, is caused by androgenetic alopecia, characterized by a receding hairline and thinning on the crown of the head.
If you have androgenetic alopecia you'll also have elevated levels of the chemical dihydrotestosterone (DHT) in your scalp. A natural byproduct of testosterone, DHT causes hair loss, and the older you get the more likely you are to have the problem. About 16 percent of men age 18 to 29 have moderate to severe hair loss, according to a recent study by Rhodes. For men 40 to 49, that percentage soars to 53 percent, the study says.
The many myths surrounding hair loss have been around for about as long as men have been trying to do something to halt or prevent their hair from falling out. Here are a few you might have heard . . . and the real truth behind the myths:
MYTH: Poor diet causes hair loss. TRUTH: Poor diet causes a host of health problems, and lackluster hair can certainly be one of them. But most male hair loss is caused by excess DHT in the scalp.
MYTH: If you wear hats a lot, you'll rub the hair off your head. TRUTH: Wearing hats will give you "hat-hair," but healthy hair should have no problem withstanding the pressure and rubbing caused by wearing a hat. Not convinced? Just consider the pro football players who spend a lot of time wearing a helmet, and whose hair is just fine.
MYTH: Losing your hair doesn't matter. TRUTH: We live in a society where appearances count - a lot. Youth and looks are highly prized, and plenty of studies have shown that men who look young, healthy and handsome prosper more professionally and personally than their less fortunate peers. What's more, even if your hair loss truly doesn't matter to anyone else, if it affects how you feel about yourself, then it matters.
MYTH: There's nothing you can do to slow or halt your hair loss. TRUTH: Thanks to a better understanding of how DHT affects hair follicles, it is now possible to do something about your hair loss. Products like Procerin, a nonprescription product, that address excess DHT, have been shown effective in battling hair loss caused by androgenetic alopecia.
An oral nutritional supplement and topical solution, Procerin's active ingredients are all-natural herbal, vitamin and mineral DHT inhibitors. There are no harsh chemicals, messy sprays, special shampoos or sexual side effects. Simply use Procerin once in the morning and again at night, reducing or even halting the further loss of hair from the scalp.
You can bust the biggest hair loss myth – that there’s nothing you can do about your hair loss – by trying Procerin. Go to www.procerin.com to try Procerin for Men risk-free for 90 Days.
