Free clinics help people access dental care

People who struggle to afford dental insurance may cut back on visits to the dentist or give up on them altogether.

However, some dentists and dental hygienists in the Columbus, Ohio area have teamed up to make sure people receive the services they need, Columbus Local News reports.

Around 170 patients visited the offices of dentists in Columbus, Ohio in 2007 for free dental care on Doctors with a Heart Day - and they predict at least as many will turn up this year.

"It should come as no surprise that many people in the greater Columbus area must, due to financial constraints, place their dental health below other important needs," commented Columbus, Ohio dentists Nicholls and Halderman in a statement.

They added that some people wait "weeks or months" to get dental care for painful conditions or even dental checkups.

Extractions, denture adjustments and dental fillings are some of the most commonly requested procedures, the dentists said.

Figures from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention indicate that more than 108 million people lack dental insurance in the U.S.

Discount dental plans, an alternative to dental insurance, provide savings of between 10 and 60 percent on most dental procedures.
