Families in Arizona are being encouraged to make sure their children receive adequate dental care from an early age.

A new campaign called First Dental Visit by Age One has been launched by the Arizona Department of Health Services, which is aimed at urging preventive oral care, Casa Grande Valley Newspapers reports.

According to RaNee Tuscano, preschool prevention program manager for the ADHS Office of Oral Health, 34 percent of kids in the state have tooth decay before the age of three. Meanwhile, 40 percent of six to eight-year-olds suffer from this dental problem.

"Early prevention and intervention is key to keeping kids healthy," explained dentist James Jennings. He told the news provider that his practice aims to make the experience of a dental visit as kid-friendly as possible.

"Visiting the dentist will hopefully become a life-long routine and not one that is dreaded," Jennings said.

The American Dental Association warns parents against putting their children to sleep with fruit juice or other sugary drinks in their bottle, as this may lead to tooth decay.
