Dental surgery helps restore missing teeth

A procedure known as Zygomatic implants may be able to help those who have suffered tooth loss regain a full smile.

Dr Adam Miller told the Courier Express that the surgery is welcomed by those who have lost teeth several years previously, as the bone in their upper jaw has dissolved "and they don't have many options."

This deterioration prevents people in this situation from using removable dentures, because they do not have a structure to hold on to.

During Zygomatic implant surgery, screw-like devices are implanted into the cheek and remaining jaw bones of the patient, which can then have false teeth attached after the mouth has healed from the procedure.

"It's a really powerful technology. We can use it to fill spaces where bone had to be removed and it prevents food from getting in and causing infections," Miller told the publication.

He added that many people find they have "60 percent of their biting force" restored after undergoing the surgery.

The American Academy of Periodontology says that dental implants are the "ideal option" for those who have missing teeth but otherwise have good dental health.
