Could dental treatment lower diabetes costs?
Updated: 9/4/2008 8:00:31 PM

Could dental treatment lower diabetes costs?A study at the University of Michigan School of Dentistry is exploring the link between gum disease and diabetes to discover if medical costs for diabetics could be lowered through dental treatment.

Previous research has suggested that people with type 2 diabetes could more effectively manage their condition if they strive to avoid gum disease.

The aim of the new study is to discover if preventative care for this dental condition could improve diabetics' health as well as saving money on healthcare.

Dr George W. Taylor of the University of Michigan School of Dentistry explained that periodontal disease is a risk factor that may cause diabetics' glycemic control to worsen.

"We believe there is the potential that periodontal treatment can provide an increment in improvement of diabetes control and subsequently a reduction in the risk for diabetes complications," he added.

The news follows the findings of a study carried out earlier this month at the Columbia University Mailman School of Public Health, which suggested that gum disease could predict the onset of type 2 diabetes.
