(ARA) - If you took some time off to start a family, and are now deciding to return to the work place, you've made a good decision. Education will open a lot of doors, but you may need a jumpstart to get where you want to go.
According to College Board, a nonprofit membership association whose mission is to connect students to college success and opportunity, room, board, tuition, books and fees during the 2007 - 08 school year were $13,589 for an in-state student at a 4-year public university. Meantime, out of state students spent, on average, $24,044 for the year and those who were pursuing a 4-year degree at a private nonprofit university paid an average of $32,307. Numbers have not yet been released for the 2008 - 09 school year, but they are expected to be slightly higher.
While higher education is expensive, the investment in your future will be worth it. The economy is very competitive these days and you will definitely see the rewards from the time and money spent on a college degree. The challenge for everyone, of course, is figuring out how to cover the costs.
When you start to investigate, you'll see you have a lot of options. They include applying for financial aid, loans, working and scholarships. For moms trying to find scholarship money, a good place to turn is www.scholarships4mom.com.
For the past 2-and-a-half years, the site has given away a $10,000 scholarship each month. Due to the success of the promotion, they recently started offering 2 per month to help mothers raise the money they need to go back to school, or to send their own kids to college.
Sharonne Hillman of Paducah, Ky., is a single parent with 4 children. She won the scholarship in June." I will be able to buy a better laptop to do my homework, and I can pay off some of my school loans. Not to mention, once I graduate I will get a promotion at work. I thank God everyday for scholarships4mom.com, because without them it would very difficult to go to school."
The $10,000 scholarship she won in 2007 helped Terri Booth send her daughter to the University of Delaware, and also provided some of the money she needed to finish her degree in Deaf Education -- a move that will help her advance at work. "I thought I had to wait until my daughter was out of college to even think about going back to school myself. Now I am able to do both, thanks to Scholarships4mom.com."
