Baseball team to teach kids about dental health
Updated: 7/25/2008 2:00:33 PM
A Major League Baseball team is to help promote dental health in Kansas City on Saturday.

Kansas City Royals are not enjoying the best of seasons on the diamond but officials from the TeamSmile campaign is hoping that two of their star players will still be able to help inspire five to 18-year-olds to take better care of their teeth.

Mike Aviles and Billy Butler will attend a special dental clinic at the Boys & Girls Clubs of Greater Kansas City Thornberry Unit on July 26th 2008 between 11:00 and 13:00 local time.

As well as getting the chance to meet a pair of sports stars, children who visit the clinic will have access to free dental treatment, as TeamSmile has agreed to fund $40,000 worth of work, ranging from X-rays to fillings.

In order to tempt in youngsters who would not normally visit a dentist, the Kansas City Royals have agreed to give away a pair of tickets for Sunday's game against Tampa Bay Rays to every child who undergoes an examination.

TeamSmile is designed to use the power of major sports teams to promote dental health to those who would not normally be able to access treatment.

That aim is shared by the Colorado Dental Society, which recently staged an event at which $1 million worth of free treatment was carried out.
