Braces are normally associated with adolescents, but when is the right time to begin orthodontic work?

The answer may be earlier than many people think. Dental expert Dr Fred Eck told the Marco Eagle that children can begin orthodontic treatment as early as six years old.

This normally occurs when there is not enough room in their mouth and the new teeth become "crowded". The child's growing years offer orthodontists a chance to fix the problem with a minimum of fuss.

It minimizes the risk of having teeth removed at a later date to make room and can significantly reduce the length of time a child needs to wear braces for when they are older.

"This prevents a lot of other problems that could develop as the child grows. Plus, it is a much more conservative and preventive approach to begin this treatment early in the child's development," Dr Eck concluded.

In addition, many older people are now opting for orthodontic work in a bid to achieve a straight, even smile. A recently study found that adults prefer braces that are unobtrusive and as unnoticeable as possible.
