Dentures offer a practical and relatively simply solution for people who have lost their teeth, but they can also be a real pain.

They have a tendency to fall out the wearer's mouth, make it difficult to eat and sometimes speak and often have to be removed at night.

This irritation was enough to persuade one Florida couple in their late 80s to go to Dr Jonathon Bromboz and ask for dental implants.

Dental implants are a more time-consuming and costly procedure than dentures, but they offer a long-lasting solution. Implants also function more like real teeth, allowing people to eat as they would normally.

"Putting dental implants into the gums to support the dentures so they don't move is a breakthrough equal to the wheel. Imagine these people being able to eat again," Dr Bromboz said.

He added: "This could be the solution … to the epidemic digestive and stomach problems older adults experience as they age and don't have workable teeth."

Recently New York dentist Dr Jan Linhart claimed to be able to fit a dental implant and set a temporary crown on it in a day, giving a patient a quick solution to the problem of a missing tooth.
