Irritable bowel syndrome (IBS) is a problem that causes abdominal pain or discomfort and changes in bowel patterns. The exact cause isn't known, but there are many different treatment options available for the millions of Americans that have the disease.
IBS symptoms include cramps and swelling in the stomach area, painful diarrhea or constipation (or both), mucus in the stool, and the feeling that you haven't finished a bowel movement.
The Aboutibs.org website reports that nearly 45 million Americans suffer with the disorder, the majority of whom are women.
A new IBS drug called ImmunoLin® by Proliant has recently tested well in studies. To keep IBS symptoms in check naturally, though, the National Digestive Diseases Information Clearinghouse (NDDIC) warns that the following foods may trigger discomfort:
- Fatty foods like french fries
- Milk products like cheese or ice cream
- Chocolate
- Alcohol
- Caffeine (found in coffee and some sodas)
- Carbonated drinks like soda
