Orthodontist answers common dental questions
Updated: 6/26/2008 12:00:42 PM

Straight, pearly whites are increasingly coveted by people wanting to look their best. As a result, increasing numbers of adults and opting for orthodontic procedures to neaten-up their teeth.

Dr Raymond George, president of the American Association of Orthodontists, has given napsnet.com the answers to some common questions on the subject.

Firstly, he dispelled the myth that braces are only for young people, noting that currently, a fifth or orthodontic patients is an adult, many of whom are over 50.

The advent of near-invisible treatment options has made orthodontics particularly appealing to adults, he added.

Dr George also explained the difference between braces and veneers, the latter of which he said simply mask unsightly teeth, while the former actually aligns teeth and corrects the bite.

Finally, in terms of identifying whether a child needs to have their teeth straightened, he said that all parents should take their kids to see an orthodontist from the age of seven.
There are also a number of things parents can look out for, such as crowded teeth, thumb sucking, or difficulty in biting and chewing.

Invisalign is one of the most popular new methods of straightening teeth. It involved moving teeth using a series of clear trays, rather than metal braces.
