Although going to the dentist is always likely to involve an element of discomfort, modern innovations have made it an altogether more pleasurable experience than it was a hundred years ago.

Gone are the days of whiskey shots and pliers - patients today can expect televisions and the latest pain-relieving techniques, the Dallas Morning News reports.

The paper has come up with a number of ways in which dentists are working to make visits to them less of a chore.

For one, many dental surgeries are now offering spa-type amenities, including eye-gel masks, warm towels and a variety of drinks.

According to the American Dental Association, around 50 percent of all dental practices are now providing these sorts of amenities to their patients.

Braces, the bane of many a teenager's life, have also come a long way in recent years from the traditional metal train tracks.

Now orthodontists can provide clear plastic tracks, or even see-through, removable plastic trays to straighten-out teeth.

Meanwhile, longer-lasting titanium implants are helping patients who would have previously worn dentures, which can be fiddly and uncomfortable.

In addition, dentists are now trained to look for other health issues. For instance, gum disease can be a sign of diabetes or coronary heart disease.

Titanium dental implants are currently the most popular option on the market for those that have lost teeth, Dental Economics recently reported.
