Dentists have developed a new tool to help them take dental impressions without an invasive or uncomfortable procedure.

At present, dentists pour a viscous liquid into a customized tray, which is then placed over the patient's teeth and left to set.

It tends to taste unpleasant and can be uncomfortable - but those days may now be over.

A new technology called iTero has been developed, which uses digital impression technology to take a 3-D image of the teeth, Kvue.com reported.

Dr. David Little told the news provider: "Now, I can see it in real time, in three dimensions on the screen. So, I know exactly if what we have is what we need. And then I can electronically send that."

The dentists will send the image to a lab where a model will be made out of plastic, which is more durable and flexible than the plaster or dental stone that is traditionally used.

"I want to look at technologies that make it more efficient for the doctor and make it better for the patient," Dr Little added.

Dental impressions are generally used to create dentures, crowns and other prostheses.
