National Root Canal Awareness Week: Watch Your Mouth

Updated: 3/25/2008 2:00:10 PM

In recognition of National Root Canal Awareness Week, which runs from March 30th to April 5th, the American Association of Endodontists (AAE) will be encouraging people on how to keep their teeth healthy in ways that do not include just brushing and flossing.

Young athletes are just one group being highlighted as particularly prone to damaging or losing natural teeth from sports injuries, with an athlete 60 times more likely to suffer a dental injury from knocked out or avulsed teeth.

The AAE urges all coaches and parents to make sure their children wear mouth guards for all sports including spring sports like softball, track and field and gymnastics, with mouth guards preventing an estimated 200,000 injuries each year according to the association.

If a tooth is knocked out, endodontists are well trained to handle dental emergencies, as their speciality lies with the health of the tooth pulp and the tissues surrounding the root of a tooth and who specialize in root canal treatments.

If anyone should experience tooth loss due to a sports injury, the AAE recommends that the person should see an endodontist within half an hour if possible, with the chances of preserving a tooth much higher if treated within 30 minutes.

The AAE, which sponsors the Root Canal Awareness Week, said the time is meant to increase awareness about root canals and dispel any myths surrounding the common procedure as well as highlight the work of endodontists.
