Employers should 'reanalyze' dental coverage
Updated: 3/5/2008 4:05:26 PM
A new report by The Segal Group found that employers should re-evaluate their coverage plans.

The February report, based on a national survey conducted with 340 group health plans for its clients, found that 82 percent provided dental coverage to its employees.

By analyzing a company's plans, changes can be made to help a company save more and help its employees where they need it.

The report emphasized the importance of dental health in a person and an employee's wellbeing and health, as it ensures they will be able to be a more productive worker.

Segal stated: "Any dental plan type can include disease prevention measures," that could also help "identify potentially costly medical conditions early enough for individuals to take action".

For dental plans that provided access to dental networks, the average network utilization as measured by the percentage of dollars paid was 59 percent. This means that by using a dental savings plan, companies can save money because "health sponsors' intense interest in managing their medical and prescription drug coverage is both understandable and prudent".

The report stated that dental coverage should not be overlooked, as it is typically the "third most utilized health care coverage, after medical and prescription drug coverage".
