A new device called OrthoCAD IQ can reportedly cut down on the time needed to wear braces on average according to one Summit County, Colorado orthodontist.

Dr. Al Bishop said the average time to wear braces in the U.S. is 26 months, while his new device that uses computer technology to fit braces more efficiently could reduce wear time to just 13 months on average, while he added that some patients have only had to wear them for six to nine months.

Dr. Bishop first takes an impression of the patient's teeth and sends it to a lab with his advice on where he thinks the braces should fit in the patient's mouth. From there, the lab technicians turn the impression into a 3D image of the patient's mouth and put the braces in the spots recommended.

He then emails his patients a copy of the virtual model for them to review and then revisions can be made if necessary. Once the designated fit is determined, Dr. Bishop uses the impression to design a tray with the brackets in place to go where they were on the computer and reduces the need to make further changes he said.

Even better, the system makes the process of putting on the braces much easier and less time consuming, with just 30 minutes needed to put on a pair of braces compared to two or three hours.

"It's a huge breakthrough in the orthodontic world," he said and compared the new technology in dentistry as going from wooden skis to parabolic skis used today.
