While many children may only have one or two teeth to care for or do not seem old enough to need a check-up at the dentist, starting a dental hygiene regimen early in life can do wonders for a youngster's teeth and lifestyle.

Baby teeth, or primary teeth as they are also known, are the foundation of strong and healthy teeth later in life according to the American Academy of Pediatric Dentistry with the proper care of a baby's teeth ensuring the correct placement for permanent teeth and even for the development of correct communication skills.

By caring for a child's teeth early on by brushing with toothpaste and going to the dentist for a check-up, parents can not only protect their child from any early problems but they can also get their child in the habit of going to the dentist as a preventative step, rather than for treating problems.

Dr. Curtis Alexander, a dentist, said that parents should bring in their child to the dentist at about age three.

"Even if they aren't quite ready for us to do a full exam, it helps them become comfortable with the process. And the next time they come in they may let us go a little further than we did the visit before," he said.
