(ARA) - The glamour and excitement portrayed in TV crime dramas aren't the only reasons to pursue a career in forensics. Professionals with forensics degrees are in high demand, and can earn good money according to the Bureau of Labor Statistics.
Forensic scientists typically earn from $30,000 to more than $100,000 annually, according to the bureau. Entry-level forensic professionals can expect to make $28,000 to $40,000 a year. The average salary for professors in forensics is $77,336, according to the College and University Professional Association for Human Resources.
Having a degree in forensic science can provide a great foundation for a career in this field. Forensic professionals can either work as a general scientist, or in specific areas of forensics. Specializations include DNA analysis, fingerprinting, firearms and computer forensics. Most professionals in forensics cover more than one area in their field.
Forensic scientists typically work in laboratories, using specialized equipment to break down and analyze evidence for use by legal professionals and law enforcement officials. Because their expertise may determine the outcome of a court ruling, it is essential that forensic scientists be detail-oriented. There are also forensic scientists who focus on cyber crimes and computer forensics, gathering digital evidence in computer crimes like identity theft, hacking and pedophilia.
Due to advancements in technology, the demand for qualified personnel in a variety of forensic positions is rising. There is no better time for studying forensic science, whether it's for personal interest or career development.
