(ARA) - Career opportunities are booming in every area of health care, including professions - like psychology - that care for people's mental well-being.
A psychology career might be right for you if you are passionate about social sciences, desire to know more about the inner workings of the mind, and enjoy teaching, advising and counseling. Or, you may opt to go into research, a key component of psychology that is critical for the betterment of the industry and the people it serves.
As the field continually evolves, new professionals are in constant demand. In fact, the psychology field is expected to grow up to 26 percent by 2014. Driving the trend is increased demand for psychological services in schools, hospitals, social service agencies, mental health centers, substance abuse treatment clinics, consulting firms and private companies.
Education is very important is the field of psychology. Most specialists, including clinical and counseling psychologists, need a doctoral degree. School psychologists need an educational specialist degree and industrial-organizational psychologists need a master's degree.
Psychology as a Career
Psychology is often a career choice for professionals who want independence. Approximately four in 10 psychologists are self-employed, compared with one in 10 among other professional workers. Psychology can be completely self-paced and a degree in the field can be utilized in many ways. According to the Department of Labor, here is a brief synopsis of different kinds of psychologists:
* Clinical psychologists constitute the largest specialty and most often work in counseling centers, independent or group practices, hospitals or clinics. There are many areas of specialization within clinical psychology, including health psychology, neuropsychology, and geropsychology.
* School psychologists work with students in elementary and secondary schools. They collaborate with teachers, parents, and school personnel to create safe, healthy and supportive learning environments for all students.
* Counseling psychologists use various techniques to advise people on how to deal with the problems of everyday living. They work in settings such as university counseling centers, hospitals and individual or group practices.
* Industrial-organizational psychologists apply psychological principles and research methods to the workplace in the interest of improving productivity and the quality of work life. They also are involved in research on management and marketing problems.
* Developmental psychologists study the physiological, cognitive, and social development that takes place throughout life. Some specialize in behavior during infancy, childhood, and adolescence, or changes that occur during maturity or old age.
* Social psychologists examine people's interactions with others and with the social environment. They work in organizational consultation, marketing research, systems design and other applied psychology fields.
* Experimental or research psychologists work in university and private research centers and in business, nonprofit and governmental organizations. They study the behavior of both human beings and animals, such as rats, monkeys and pigeons. Prominent areas of study in experimental research include motivation, thought, attention, learning and memory, sensory and perceptual processes, effects of substance abuse, and genetic and neurological factors affecting behavior.
