Medical Transcription: A Booming Industry
Updated: 9/13/2007 12:04:51 PM

(ARA) - If you are considering changing careers or starting your own business, you may want to consider a job as a medical transcriptionist, a health-based career that shows little sign of slowing down. In fact, the U.S. Department of Labor projects jobs in the field will increase by at least 27 percent in the next seven years as the health care industry continues to boom. The demand for medical transcriptionists is on the rise because of the aging population, which requires more medical tests, procedures and treatments. Qualified entrants to the field must have proper training and many programs are now offered online.

Medical transcriptionists produce reports, studies, letters and other documents created from dictated recordings made by physicians and other professionals in the health care industry. Some of the documents produced by medical transcriptionists include discharge summaries, autopsy reports, progress notes, operative reports and history and physical examination reports. Once reviewed and approved, the important medical documents often become part of the permanent files for patients.

Employers look for medical transcriptionists that have postsecondary training. Many vocational schools, community colleges and online programs offer this training. Of these choices, the benefit to getting a degree online is that students can work on their degree without having to travel. Online classes can be completed from home, any time of day. To complete a medical transcription program, courses often include anatomy, medical terminology, English grammar and punctuation and legal health documentation.

As the medical community continues to evolve, medical transcriptionists are urged to regularly take classes to make sure they are aware of the latest medical terms and procedures. According to the U.S. Department of Labor, a Certified Medical Transcriptionist must earn continuing education credits every three years to keep their certification.

A medical transcriptionist can earn more than $19 an hour, with the highest paid transcriptionists often working in general medical and surgical hospitals. The U.S. Department of Labor notes that about four out of ten medical transcriptionists work in hospitals and three out of ten work in physician's offices. Other jobs can be found in diagnostic laboratories, outpatient centers and in therapist and audiologist offices.

With the proper training and experience, medical transcriptionists can become supervisors, work from home and even go into consulting, editing and teaching.

eLearners.com, an online education resource that connects prospective students with online learning providers, offers medical transcription courses from accredited online colleges and online universities.  The site's searchable database allows those interested in the field to compare different programs to find the perfect fit for their individual needs.
