The Syndrome Stew Could Kids Have More Than One Helping
Child Behavioral Problem
Updated: 9/27/2005 10:01:06 AM
It starts with a nagging feeling. Your child’s behavior seems more extreme than the other kids at the playground or at school. He constantly daydreams or throws tantrums. Could it be ADHD, Asperger’s Syndrome, anxiety or some other disorder? It may actually be a combination. “Co-occurence of multiple difficulties is the norm, not the exception,” writes Martin L. Kutscher, MD in his book, Kids in the Syndrome Mix of ADHD, LD, Asperger’s, Tourette’s, Bipolar, and More! The one stop guide for parents, teachers, and other professionals (October 2005, Jessica Kingsley Publishers, $19.95; 1-84310-810-0). “One reason, then, that parents and teachers may have trouble figuring out what the problem is that there is typically more than one, each occurring with its own degree of intensity.”

Parents, teachers and therapists can be confused by the multitude of syndromes and how to properly treat a child with these problems. Dr. Kutscher walks readers through each of the neuro-behavioral disorders in children with the cause, symptoms and treatments. Short, simple chapters and language help caregivers create a plan of action from finding the proper diagnosis to weighing the pros and cons of medication. Rather than turn the reader into a psychiatrist, Dr Kutscher’s provides a small number of high-yield recommendations. If even a few of these suggestions are implemented, he believes a there will be significant effect. Busy parents and professionals dealing with challenging children need a concise guide because they do not have the time to read through long, more complicated texts.

Kids in the Syndrome Mix of ADHD, LD, Asperger’s, Tourette’s, Bipolar and More! includes contributions from Tony Attwood, PhD and Robert R. Wolff, MD. Recognized as the world’s leading authority on Asperger’s syndrome, Dr. Tony Attwood wrote the groundbreaking text Asperger’s Syndrome: A Guide for Parents and Professionals. Dr. Robert R. Wolff is a member of the Departments of Pediatrics and Neurology at the New York Medical College.

Dr. Martin L. Kutscher is a pediatric neurologist with more than 18 years’ experience of diagnosing neuropsychiatric disorders. He is the author of ADHD Book: Living Right Now! (2003, Neurology Press) and of www.PediatricNeurology.com. He is currently Assistant Clinical Professor of Pediatrics and Neurology at the New York Medical College in Valhalla, New York and a partner of Pediatric Neurological Associates in White Plains, New York.
