(HealthNewsDigest.com) - MORGANTOWN, W.Va. - West Virginia University medical students will have an opportunity to explore public health issues facing our world as part of a new program offered by the WVU School of Medicine's Department of Community Medicine.
The Public Health Track, which was recently approved by the WVU School of Medicine Curriculum Committee, will be integrated with the regular M.D. curriculum. The program offers a focused learning experience in public health, with graduate level education and the opportunity to pursue professional education cooperatively with experienced faculty.
"Our new program will increase the number of physicians trained in public health during medical school, and provide West Virginia with well-trained physicians who can respond to public health disasters and keep the public healthy in the 21st century," said Rachel T. Abraham, M.D., M.P.H., assistant professor and director of the MD/PH Track. "The PH Track to MD/MPH will be well-related to the MD degree; the MPH
practicum experience will enhance and guide the selection of potential residency opportunities."
Students may apply in February of the year in which the summer program is offered. Four students will be selected for the program each year by a committee made up of faculty.
The components of the Public Health Track are: completion of core Master of Public Health (MPH) courses online; completion of MPH practicum; participation in community service experiences linked to public health opportunities; and completion of remaining requirements of MPH degree during primary care residency at WVU (optional).
Students can complete the MPH degree during residency training in the following areas: internal medicine; family medicine; pediatrics; obstetrics and gynecology; emergency medicine; and in post-graduate years 2 and 3 of training.
Students accepted in the public health track must remain in good
academic and professional standing within the M.D. degree curriculum.
