For people with disabilities, dental health can be a challenge
Updated: 12/28/2012 5:57:40 AM

For people with disabilities, dental health can be a challenge Access to professional dental care is vital, but it's out of reach for many individuals. For example, people who do not have insurance or a discount dental plan may have issues getting the treatments they need. Another group that may have issues with dental health is the disabled. People with mental disabilities may have a difficult time sitting still for a dental visit or even understanding what's happening, and as a result, some dentists do not treat them.

Recently, NJ.com, a New Jersey website, reported on how one local dental office specializes in helping people with these disabilities, and how important that is to the community. According to the news source, out of the 7,900 dental offices surveyed in New Jersey, only 211 treat people with developmental disabilities. One of these is Matheny Medical and Educational Center.

"In order for the person to have the highest quality of life and to be healthy so that they could enjoy their lives, and interact with their environment, they need quality dental care which they cannot get in other places outside of Matheny," Steve Proctor, president/CEO of Matheny Medical, told NJ.com.

The International Association for Disability and Oral Health holds a conference every two years to discuss issues related to dental health and the disabled.
