An annual report conducted the the Pew Children's Dental Campaign recently indicated that the state of Arkansas has moved up two letter grades from an 'F' to a 'C' after implementing new initiatives to improve oral health among residents, according to an article published by the Arkansas News.
The newspaper reported that within the past year, state legislature enacted regulations that require the fluoridation of all public water supplies that serve populations exceeding 5,000 people. The news provider cited information from the Pew report, which stated that the fluoride act provides 87 percent of all Arkansas residents with access to fluoridated drinking water.
"Health providers, advocates and state officials have worked hard to get Arkansas kids to the dentist. It’s also exciting to know that legislation passed this year will help even more children," said Eddie Ochoa, an associate professor at the University of Arkansas for Medical Sciences and attending physician at Arkansas Children’s Hospital, quoted by the news source.
According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, optimal levels of fluoride in drinking water have been proven to help prevent - and sometimes reverse - tooth decay.
