A new television commercial produced by the National Health Service of England depicts a scene with a vampire and his victim, which is meant to play off the popular Twilight movie series. Health officials explained that the new advertisement aims to encourage young adults to practice good oral hygiene, according to a recent article published by Healthcare magazine.
The publication said that the female victim portrayed in the short clip is repulsed by the vampire's bad breath, despite the sexual undertones of their encounter. NHS officials told the magazine that they hope fans of the vampire film trilogy will heed the message of the advertisement. They also said they believe male viewers may conjure that poor oral health can affect their intimate relationships.
"Men are traditionally less likely to go to the dentist mainly because they don't think of the long-term health consequences. We know this group of men respond well to things that are related to being with a partner, so that's why the clip is about a couple," said NHS associate director of public health Simon Bryant, quoted by the publication.
According to researchers at the University of Buffalo, one in every four young Americans suffers from chronic bad breath.
