On February 4, the University of Nebraska Medical Center (UNMC) College of Dentistry in Lincoln, Nebraska held Children’s Dental Day to help treat low-income youngsters in need of dental care.
Each year UNMC dentists perform extractions, root canals and cleanings on this day through a full-service clinic. Nebraskan volunteers help find local children most in need of oral health screenings and services, and then provide them with emotional support during their visits.
These low-income children receive treatment by upper-level dental hygiene students at the school. Other first-year dental students teach the children about tooth decay and cleaning techniques. They also stress the importance of consuming tooth-safe snacks and low-sugar drinks.
UNMC dentist John Reinhardt notes that "about 25 percent of the children in Nebraska experience 80 percent of the dental disease reported in the state."
The ADA emphasizes that parents should train children early on in good oral healthcare and preventive techniques, including brushing and flossing at least twice daily.
