In an effort to increase access to dental care, some schools are building new facilities in which students treat patients from the surrounding area. One example is the Kornberg School of Dentistry at Temple University, which recently announced it will open a new clinic next summer, according to The Temple News.
Amid Ismail, dean of dentistry at the institution, told the news source that there is a "significant need for comprehensive dental care in North Philadelphia."
With the help of a grant worth more than $2 million, the school will be able to equip the new facility with 10 dental chairs, two dentists and two dental residents, according to the news provider.
Treatments that the clinic offers will not require individuals to have insurance and along with area residents, students and faculty will be able to receive oral care. Ismail told the newspaper that currently, the dental school treats between 80,000 and 100,000 patients each year, and that this number is expected to grow.
Many older Americans who have the poorest oral hygiene are underprivileged and do not have dental insurance, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. However, there are low-cost, affordable ways in which these individuals can seek dental care.
