More than 19 percent of children in the U.S. who are between the ages of 6 and 19 have untreated dental cavities, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. In order to curb this growing problem, some dental clinics are expanding so that an additional number of individuals can be treated.
The Hour reports that the Day Street Community Health Center (DSCHC) in Connecticut was recently renovated and will provide dental and health services for more underprivileged children and adults in Norwalk.
According to the newspaper, the expansion cost $805,000 to complete and is expected to now serve more than 12,000 patients.
Lori Weir, physician at the DHCHC, told the news source that a greater number of people need access to service. She added that it is important to seek care because "dental and mental health are closely linked with overall health."
People who are in need of regular oral care can find low-cost ways to receive treatment. Discount dental plans provide affordable coverage for these individuals and their children.
