The Creston Children's Dental Clinic (CCDC) in Portland, Oregon was shut-down earlier this year because there was not enough money to fund the project, according to The Oregonian. However, childrens' need for dental care prompted efforts to re-open the office.
When the CCDC closed, fundraising efforts began in hopes that the clinic would be able to help children once again. Public school students that come from low-income families are the target individuals receiving the assistance. The project relies on volunteer hygienists and dentists, as the budget is about $130,000 each year.
Lora Mattson, the dental society's executive director, tells the paper that it is important for children to have good dental care when it comes to school because "if a child can't sleep, can't eat, they can't learn."
The clinic provides services such as regular exams or fixing cavities. According to the CDC, as of 2004 over 19 percent of children between the ages of 2-19 had untreated cavities.
One way parents can get their children the care they need is through discounted dental plans which offers individuals and their families low-cost affordable plans.
