Upon returning from 10 years of service in Central America, a Florida-based dentist has continued offering free services in the U.S., according to TCPalm.com. Each Wednesday, Dave Girlinghouse invites patients lacking dental insurance to his mobile office, which he used while working abroad.
Girlinghouse treats patients who suffer from chronic dental pain and are unable to afford regular dental visits. His services include filling cavities and tooth extractions, which can prevent the progression of more severe dental problems, the website reports.
By providing similar cost-effective services, dentists and oral hygiene specialists in other parts of the country are contributing to lowering the number of people in the U.S. who suffer from untreated dental problems. For example, an estimated 23 percent of Americans aged 20 to 64 years have untreated tooth decay, according to DentalGuideUSA.com.
People with little or no dental insurance who take advantage of these opportunities can also benefit from signing up for a discount dental plan. These affordable offerings allow patients to make annual dentist appointments and receive treatments that may not be available to them at free dental clinics.
