National survey shows that millions of people visit free dental clinics A recent survey conducted by researchers at the University of Ohio and University of Chicago found that approximately 1.8 million people in the U.S. visited free clinics to receive both medical and dental treatments.

The non-profit facilities provide free care ranging from annual check-ups to immediate emergency attention. Also, because of donations from organizations across the country, families and individuals with little or insurance aren't burdened with dental and medical bills or the concern of being turned away.

A total of 764 clinics were surveyed and reported that on average, services are available 18 hours per week. Also, information from the questionnaire showed that the national average new patients was 747 individuals take advantage of these free services.

"Our nation's 46 million uninsured often delay or forgo needed health care because the cost is prohibitive," the authors wrote. They added that "aside from cost considerations, care is frequently difficult to find, especially for those with the least resources."

Individuals and families with little or no dental insurance can benefit from researching discount dental plans. These programs can help patients visit dentists on a regular basis and receive services that can prevent further oral and health complications.
