A team of dentists recently spent a day in an elementary school in Ontario, Ohio, providing students with dental care and promoting dental hygiene.
The team took care of approximately 60 children, according to The Sandusky Register. The dentists will return in about six months to check up on the kids and make sure their teeth are still healthy.
Many families in the area can no longer afford traditional dental insurance, so free events such as Ontario Elementary's are becoming very popular.
"Most of these kids wouldn't see a doctor if we didn't come," said Kelli Rodriguez-Laws to the Register. She is a dental hygienist and a resident of Milan, a town about an hour away from Ontario. Rodriguez-Laws works alongside fellow dental hygienist Sue Jones and a retired oral surgeon named Ronald Bell.
According to the American Dental Association, childhood tooth decay is the single most common chronic childhood disease. However, your dentist can help prevent or reduce the incidence of decay by applying sealants to your child's teeth.
