The American Dental Association hosted a dental health summit with approximately 150 stakeholders from non-profits, government agencies and private industry in an effort to create a common goal of expanding dental care access to underserved populations.
The summit, held on March 23-25, reportedly had the participants discuss their experiences with providing dental care and focused on ways to reduce the disparity between those who had access to those who didn't, perhaps because of a lack of dental insurance.
Some of the topics that were brought up during the summit included increasing collaboration between the dental and medical communities as well as strengthening the dental public health infrastructure. One suggestion sought to improve dental health literacy through social marketing.
"The ADA firmly believes that practical solutions must come from a broad spectrum of stakeholders and then be implemented first among those populations at highest risk for oral disease and with the least ability to access care," said John S. Findley, ADA president. "We are committed to finding common ground and shared solutions to address the oral health needs of the most vulnerable among us."
