Some kids see braces as a cool accessory In the past, many children and teenagers may have dreaded wearing braces - even if they knew it would improve their dental health.

However, according to the American Association of Orthodontists, today's braces have progressed beyond old stereotypes of a mouthful of wires, with some young people even viewing the dental care option as a "cool" accessory.

For one thing, braces brackets are now smaller than they have ever been, with shiny metal wires largely a thing of the past. People can also opt for colored or cleared bands for their braces, which can allow children to have more fun with their dental care.

"This fashion trend is good for patients-motivated patients are far more likely to follow their orthodontist's instructions and complete their treatment on-time with good results," explained Dr Mervin W. Graham of the AAO.

In fact, the group even suggests that braces have become so modern and unobtrusive that some parents are choosing to get their own teeth straightened after they see how the process works for their kids.

According to the AAO, more than 80 percent of mothers whose children have braces say their kids' visit to the orthodontist is a positive experience.
