Kids in a California community have been learning about the importance of dental care from a group of dental hygiene students, according to a report in the Press-Enterprise.
The youngsters learned about brushing, flossing, checkups and cleanings as part of the California Children's Dental Disease Prevention Program.
Dental hygiene trainees from Riverside Community College said they planned to make visits to two dozen elementary schools in the area to spread the message of proper dental care.
Program coordinator Janice Balbier told the news provider that the experience helps supplement classroom teaching for future hygienists.
"It's a great opportunity for the students to work in the community and understand the needs of younger patients," she explained.
Meanwhile, a licensed dental hygienist was on hand to offer free screenings to the kids after their lesson.
To practice as a dental hygienist, candidates need a degree from an accredited school and a state license. The job involves offering patients preventive dental care, such as teeth cleaning and instructions on how to improve and maintain dental health.
