Consuming dairy products may end up benefiting more than just your bones - it can also promote good dental health.
Research published in the January 2007 issue of the Journal of Periodontology found a link between dairy consumption and a reduced risk of gum disease.
Japanese scientists analyzed the dietary habits of 942 people and also assessed their level of dental health.
They concluded that those who ate 55 or more grams of food or drink containing lactic acid also had a lower incidence of periodontal disease.
Commenting on the findings, Dr Susan Karabin, president of the American Academy of Periodontology, said that the millions of Americans who suffer from gum disease should take heed.
"By regularly consuming dairy products such as cheese and milk, something many people do each day, the risk of developing gum disease may decrease," she said.
She also emphasized the connection between healthy gums and overall wellbeing.
These links have been strengthened in a variety of studies conducted in the past few years. Gum disease has been linked to heart disease and diabetes, among other conditions.
