According to dentist Dr Steve Jackson, the typical diets of most Americans have become increasingly likely to cause tooth decay since the 1970s, with sweet treats and high-carbohydrate foods becoming increasingly popular.
This problem is particularly acute in children under six, as they cannot brush their teeth without adult supervision, as well as those with desk jobs who tend to snack on sugary foods throughout the day, he told InsideNoVA.com.
While most people are aware that chocolate bars and soft drinks are bad for their teeth, there are also a number of seemingly innocuous foods that can also contribute to tooth decay.
Dr Jackson notes that alcohol, crackers, mints, dried fruit and carbohydrate-rich foods such as pasta and rice all have high potential to cause tooth decay.
Bread, fruit juice and diet soft drinks also made it onto the list, but are only considered to have moderate potential to do harm.
Brushing and flossing every day and having regular dental checkups can clear the bacteria left by these foods before it develops and minimize the risk of tooth decay, Dr Jackson stated.
Although sweets are generally thought to be bad for teeth, dental experts have recently been considering giving children gummy bears flavored with the decay-preventing sugar substitute xylitol.
