Lawsuit claims lollipop contributed to poor dental health

Earlier this month a man from Texas filed a lawsuit against a company and claimed their Actiq fentanyl lollipop negatively affected his dental health by rotting his teeth.

Greg Lee Minckley alleges in the suit that the sugar in the lollipop "destroyed" his teeth and forced him to get $37,000 in dental care to remedy the problem. The lollipops were designed as a way to administer pain medication through a lozenge at the end of the stick for cancer patients.

Minckley was initially given the lollipop to treat pain that was caused by pancreatitis.

Aside from this case, there have also been reports of some children overdosing on the medication, due to the fact that it looks like a typical piece of candy.

While not everyone may have access to these lollipops, it does bring up the issue of how too much sugar can affect a person's dental health.
People who eat or drink foods that have a high sugar content have an increased risk of developing cavities in their mouth, which if untreated can led to tooth decay.

The American Dental Association recommends brushing twice a day, flossing daily, eating a balanced diet and visiting your dentist regularly to maintain optimal dental health and to avoid tooth decay.
