Don't lose your teeth as you age
Updated: 9/28/2012 5:59:59 AM

People who want to remain fit into their golden years should pay closer attention to their dental health. Recently, A Healthier Michigan published some tips by the American Dental Association (ADA) on what people should be doing if they want to keep their natural teeth when they are well past their prime, in honor of the fact that September is Healthy Aging Month.

First, the ADA states that it's important to replace toothbrushes every three to four months, since these dental care tools are teeming with bacteria from the mouth. Also, if the bristles become matted before three to four months, it's time to ditch the brush.

Next, the organization notes that it's important for people to drink plenty of water and brush their teeth twice a day. Also, smoking increases the risk for gum disease and a number of other dental health problems, so people who want to keep their teeth in shape should not engage in this habit.

According to the American Academy of Periodontology, almost one out of every four people over the age of 65 have lost all of their teeth. Individuals who don't want this to be their fate should practice proper dental care techniques.
