For some parents, it can be a struggle to get their kids to visit a dentist. This is because many children are afraid of dental health professionals, and will whine, cry, or even throw a downright tantrum to keep from going. Recently, WorlDental.com published an article offering some tips on how to asuage a child's fears of dental care.
First, the news source recommended asking the dentist to explain everything that is going to happen during the visit, this will help the child be less afraid of the dental tools. Next, the information provider suggested keeping kids distracted at the dentist.
"Children like to play, and they can easily forget about anxiousness if they are allowed to play even during the dental treatment. Or, in many dental offices there are special cartoon DVD's available so that the child can be somewhat distracted and the dentist can perform his job," according to the news source.
WebMD suggests that parents avoid telling children that a trip to the dentist will be painful. Instead, explain the importance of dental health and regular teeth cleaning and leave it up to the dentist to talk about the actual procedures, since he or she has been trained to talk to children in a non-threatening way.
