Teeth whitening procedures are popular, but what if you can't afford them?
Updated: 11/11/2011 6:59:59 PM

Health.com suggests using a combination of strawberries and baking soda to whiten teeth. The American Academy of Cosmetic Dentistry states that teeth whitening procedures have become increasingly popular over the past five years, and that the number of people getting their teeth professionally whitened is up by 300 percent. Of course, not everyone can afford to get cosmetic work done of their mouth, especially if they can't even afford dental insurance. This is why it's important to know some of the low-cost ways to get a brighter smile.

According to Micheal Kosdon, D.D.S., celery and cauliflower work as a sort of "nature's toothbrush" by scrubbing teeth as a person eats them. This is due to their rough, crunchy texture that is able to help get rid of plaque buildup. The dentist also suggested eating yogurt or cheese for the properties in these foods that can help prevent cavities.

Health.com suggests using a combination of strawberries and baking soda to whiten teeth.

"Crush the strawberry to a pulp, then mix with the baking soda until blended. Use a soft toothbrush to spread the mixture onto your teeth. Leave on for five minutes, then brush thoroughly with toothpaste to remove the berry - baking soda mix," according to the news source.
