AAPD offers tips to keep kids' teeth safe on Halloween
Updated: 10/31/2018 2:02:22 PM

Kids love Halloween, mostly because it means getting large amounts of candy. Kids love Halloween, mostly because it means getting large amounts of candy. For dentists, this means an increase in broken braces and lost fillings, which can potentially lead to expensive dental procedures. In response to this, the American Academy of Pediatric Dentistry (AAPD) has released a statement on how to maintain healthy teeth during this holiday.

First, the organization suggested that parents monitor not only how much candy their children eat, but how long it takes them to eat it. Candy should be eaten right away, and not held in the mouth for long periods of time. Also, hard or chewy candies can damage dental work, so try to avoid letting kids consume excessive amounts of sweets that tend to stick to the teeth.

The AAPD also suggested that parents of children under 8 or 9 should help their kids brush their teeth.

"Children really can't brush by themselves unless they can do one of three things: they can write cursive, they can tie their shoe or they can cut up a steak on a plate," stated Rhea Haugseth, president of the AAPD.

Finally, the organization stated that children should visit the dentist every six months, so parents should encourage their kids not to be afraid but to see it as a fun experience.
