A report released by the Pew Center has announced that Maryland provides better dental health care for its child population than any other state in the U.S. The state's dentists, in association with public agencies promoting oral health at various levels of government, have managed to bring about this notable development, according to American University radio station WAMU.
The news source reports that in the fairly recent past, the state of dental services for children was not nearly as favorable as it is now reported to be. As an example, four years ago, a 12-year-old boy from Prince George's County, Diamonte Driver, was killed by a brain infection stemming from an abscessed tooth, which could not be addressed, as his mother could not afford the necessary dental treatments.
Today, the state runs a total of eight dental service clinics for low-income residents. Additionally, dental practices and government health agencies, as part of their collaborative efforts, have provided considerable financial assistance for Maryland families who would ordinarily have difficulty paying for dental check-ups and procedures.
As notable as Maryland's program is, the American Dental Association has stated that many states do not provide sufficient monetary assistance for low-income children, families and adults in need of dental care.
