The American Dental Association (ADA), one of the most prominent dental organizations in the U.S., released a new report on August 16, highlighting the importance of providing dental health care to underprivileged Americans. The report is entitled Breaking Down Barriers to Oral Health for All Americans: Repairing the Tattered Safety Net.
This document is the second in a series of several extensive reports by the ADA, examining various facets of the state of oral health services throughout the U.S.
Several specific principles are proposed in the new report. In terms of care and treatment, it stresses the importance of preventing dental afflictions before they occur and educating patients about dental hygiene and care so that they effectively go about those preventative processes.
Significant attention is paid to solutions for more effectively providing care to economically disadvantaged U.S. citizens by improving these individuals' awareness of such services, and promoting their benefits through public outreach. Additionally, liaisons between public and private dental services are encouraged.
The National Institute of Dental and Craniofacial Research states that community water systems in the U.S. that are fluoridated, serving approximately two-thirds of the country's population, help promote decreases in tooth decay in those communities.
