There are three different techniques and numerous brands of products that individuals can use to whiten their teeth.
In a recent article published by New York-based ABC-13 News, one local dentist offered some insight on teeth whitening.
"Bleaching is safe as long as you first have a dental exam, and have no cavities or cracks in your teeth," said Dr. Hans Malmstrom, quoted by the news source.
He explained that cracks in teeth often go undetected and sensitivity or nerve damage can occur when these abnormalities come into contact with whitening agents.
The expert recommended in-office whitening procedures that involve trays that are molded to the patient's mouth. Unlike brightening strips, these devices are fit for an individual's unique needs and are moderately priced at around $400.
Malmstrom told the news provider that during the first few weeks after whitening treatments, people should try to avoid substances that are known to stain teeth. These include coffee, tobacco and red wine.
According to a survey conducted by the American Academy of Cosmetic Dentistry, more than 99 percent of respondents think that a bright smile is a social asset.
